August 10, 2008 - Metro Volunteer Team Report (Closing Speech)
Written by Ronald Kwak
This past summer, a group of eight volunteers from Metro Community Church, one Zimele's supporting organization went for two weeks to Kwazulu Natal, South Africa to serve the Zimele communities. The following is the transcript from my closing speech from Our Trip Report to Metro on Sunday, August 10, 2008. As we close this time, we want to say three simple words that I know will fall far short of how we feel. Thank you Metro. Thank you from the people of Kwazulu Natal, South Africa.  Thank you from Rosetta and her Zimele South Africa staff.  Thank you from the Summer Missions Team.  And thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love this passage, because in the midst of this exciting call is a kernel of truth that is subtlety placed but when understood can be life changing&he... (2191 more chars)

July 21, 2008 - My Impressions of A Savings Groups
Written by Ronald Kwak
Zimele in Zulu, means to ‘stand on your own 2 feet’. This name was chosen because it captures the essence of what we are about, our vision, and our mission. What do I mean by that? Let me explain. If you go to the rural and shanty towns in South Africa, you will find families where the father is often absent, grandmothers are raising families of 7, because the parents died from AIDS related causes (an estimated 40% of Kwazulu Natal has HIV AIDS), or what is most heart breaking, orphan headed households. These families often live on less than $ 2 - 3 a day, which mostly comes from government grants. This isn’t close to the amount a family needs to survive, much less send their children to school. While some people, particularly the young youth want to work, finding opportunities are few and far between. And soon most come to accept their condition and are content collecting government handouts. What you have is essentially a welfare state. This is a lot of what ... (3642 more chars)
